So we have an Engineering skill system within the base game rules for Mana Punk. The thing about those rules as they stand right now is that they are extremely simple and ‘streamlined’. You cannot create many items beyond the ones already listed in the Engineering chapter of the Game Guide. This limits starting engineers, locking them into an abbreviated list of possible creations. Beyond the line created by this inherent limitation all other crafting ideas must be balanced and approved manually by the presiding Game Master. In an ever-expanding effort to add new and interesting mechanics to the Mana Punk game system, our creative team is constantly trying to think up new and interesting mechanics to put in future game additions. Certain game mechanics seem ubiquitous; things like flanking or attacks of opportunity make their way into every game system under the sun. Things such as these become common tools because of the way they seem to line up with their real life equivalents.
But real life can be kind of boring.
The farther I delve down this proverbial rabbit hole, the more I pine for the strange and esoteric in my game. I not only want more variety in the capabilities of my characters but in how those capabilities are carried out as well. I fondly think back to games of Deadlands, a system that required you play a quick hand of poker against the Game Master in order to successfully cast a spell (or generate a spell-like effect). At the time I considered this to be an ingenious way to put a creative twist on what could have been another boring dice roll. With a simple cut of the cards you could shape your own fate for better… or sometimes for worse. Another mechanic that I look back upon favorably is the opposed melee check mechanic, something that definitely adds a layer of danger to the concept of “closing in for the kill”.
Mana Punk is still young and as such is still finding its own footing in the realm of role-playing games; daily we wade through what to add and what to cut as the system grows.
